Will My Diet Change with Veneers?

Bonding veneers to the front surfaces of your teeth visible when smiling can address many imperfections. You won’t need multiple procedures or a lengthy treatment plan to fix gaps, stains, and many other flaws. Your dazzling smile can last for 10 years or longer, but many factors will affect its lifespan, like the foods you eat. Here’s what you should avoid to get the most out of your investment.

Foods to Avoid with Porcelain Veneers

Veneers are thinner than ever, but they are durable. They can withstand everyday wear and tear, but certain foods can damage them. It’s best to avoid:

  • Hard or Crunchy Foods: Eating hard or crunchy foods often can lead to chips and fractures.
  • Sticky or Chewy Foods: Your veneers are bonded well to your teeth, but sticky or chewy foods can loosen them over time.
  • Sugars and Starches: Veneers can’t get cavities, but your underlying teeth are still vulnerable to decay. Limit how often you have sugars and starches to prevent cavity-causing bacteria.
  • Stain-Causing Foods and Drinks: Veneers can’t discolor, but your teeth can still stain. Limit how often you have dark foods and drinks. If you can’t resist a glass of red wine with dinner or a cup of coffee in the morning, drink it through a straw and rinse your mouth with water after you’ve finished.
  • Alcohol: Alcohol can loosen the bonding material holding your veneers in place, which can cause you to need replacements sooner.

Get the Most From Your Investment

Veneers are meant to provide long-lasting results that can last for a decade or more by following a few tips:

  • Use the Right Dental Products: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and nonabrasive toothpaste to avoid scratching your veneers, which can make them look discolored.
  • Commit to Brushing and Flossing: Brush your teeth for 2 minutes at least twice daily and floss every night before going to bed to remove food particles and plaque. You’ll keep your teeth and gums healthy and your veneers looking their best.
  • Break Bad Oral Habits: Veneers are strong, but they aren’t indestructible. Break any bad habits that can damage them, like chewing on your fingernails or using your teeth in place of scissors and other tools. If you smoke, kick the habit to prevent tar and nicotine stains. You’ll also support a healthy mouth and body.
  • Visit Your Dentist: Schedule a cleaning and checkup with your dentist every 6 months to keep your teeth and gums healthy. They will check your veneers at every appointment to ensure they last their longest.

You may have to limit a few of your favorite foods and drinks, but they are a small price to pay to get the most from your veneers.
