Are you curious what makes a dentist qualified to work on patients? They must all meet certain standards to be licensed, but the type of education and experience can vary from provider to provider.
For example, all dentists must earn either a Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS) or Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) degree from one of more than 70 institutions accredited by the ADA. This usually includes rigorous classroom learning combined with hands-on experience and residencies. Then, they can choose to specialize in one or more of 12 topics recognized by the ADA.
