8 of the Strangest Dental Emergencies Ever

There are a handful of dental emergencies that dentists regularly treat. For example, they might see infected teeth, sports injuries, and similar situations. Once in a while, though, they run into a patient who surprises them with their oral condition. Are you curious to learn about some of the strangest dental emergencies ever? Continue reading this blog post.

Starting a Garden

A patient visited a dentist complaining of a toothache and a persistent pain in his gums. The dentist determined that root canal therapy was the best way to address the situation. When he accessed the tooth’s interior, he received a shock. Instead of decay and infection, he saw a sprouting plant! It had come from a tomato seed that had gotten stuck in the patient’s mouth.

Unwelcome Visitors

A little boy who had never been to a dentist began complaining of severe oral pain. When his parents took him in for care, the dentist discovered maggots in his gums! This account provides powerful motivation for parents to make sure their children receive regular dental care from the time they are very young.

Overly Long Denture Wear

Traditional dentures are designed to be taken out each night and thoroughly cleaned. One dentist was unpleasantly surprised when a patient came to see him with dentures that had been in her mouth for months on end! The result was a horrible smell and an infection in the patient’s gums.

Malfunctioning Bridge

One patient had an extensive bridge in his mouth, which was held in place by his canine teeth. When the bridge began to feel loose, he visited the dentist. The problem was that the canine teeth were no longer attached to the underlying bone. When the bridge was removed, the teeth came with it!

Recycled Crown

It is important to be transparent with your dentist. One patient lost her crown, and her dentist was able to reattach it. Unfortunately, she withheld some important details. Before her appointment, her dog had swallowed the crown. Once it came out in the dog’s stool, she washed it off so her dentist could place it back on her tooth.

DIY Dental Drilling

Dentists use specialized drills and have extensive training on how to use them. Sadly, one patient decided to take matters into his own hands. After drilling into his own tooth, the drill bit got stuck. Only then did he call his dentist and ask for assistance.

Superglue and a Super Disaster

One woman tried to reattach her lost crown with superglue (that’s never a good idea). In the process, she ended up gluing her teeth together and getting glue throughout her mouth and throat.

Calculus Bridge Removal

If oral hygiene is neglected for too long, plaque and tartar build up in a thick layer on the teeth. Eventually, they can connect the teeth in a formation that is known as a calculus bridge. One patient decided to brush her teeth vigorously enough to remove her calculus bridge. Her teeth ended up falling out because the bridge was the only thing holding them in place!

Dental emergencies can happen to anyone, but hopefully, you will never face any situation similar to the ones discussed above.
