Is this something you should call your dentist about right away, or can it wait? To find out the answers to these questions and more, keep reading!

Are Broken Dentures All That Serious?

It might not seem like it, but broken dentures can be dental emergencies. No, you’re likely not bleeding and may not have an oral health condition, but you need your dentures for eating and talking. They’re essential for daily living, and at the same time, putting broken dentures back in your mouth can cut your soft oral tissues or cause other injuries.

Since dentists don’t recommend wearing snapped or cracked dentures and want to repair them as soon as possible for you, they consider this type of situation an emergency.

Can’t I Fix My Dentures Myself?

Dentists also don’t recommend trying to fix your dentures yourself, even if you have a “denture repair kit.” These repair kits aren’t always as good as they say they are, and you could end up doing more harm than good. It’s especially important to stay away from home remedies like superglue – superglue and other substances can be quite toxic to have in your mouth!

What Should I Do Instead?

First, pick up any broken pieces that you can find and store them in a safe container. Then call your dentist as soon as possible so they can help you schedule an appointment. They’ll do their best to see you promptly, but if you have some time before your appointment, continue to brush your gums, cheeks, and tongue, and stick to eating soft foods. When it’s time to go to your dentist’s office, remember to bring the broken pieces you collected.

What Will My Dentist Do to Fix My Dentures?

Your dentist might be able to simply reattach the broken pieces of your dentures with a special, mouth-safe material. Alternatively, they might make slight adjustments or fill in minor cracks or chips. If your dentures are split or fractured, however, it’s usually best to replace them.

Rest assured that your dentist will keep you informed about their findings and your options. Let them take care of you, and you’ll be back to life as usual in no time!

About the Practice

Drs. Frank and Jodie Rubal both have well over 20 years of experience in dentistry, and diligently pursue advanced training courses to keep their skills sharp.
